Cotile Lake
Area Bird List – Western Rapides Parish, Louisiana USA
This list represents birds encountered within a 5 mile radius of Cotile
Lake Recreation Area including the lake proper, the high land dominated
by mixed pine and deciduous forest immediately around the lake and the low
alluvial farm lands to the east of the lake.
The Cotile Lake Recreation Area is located off La. Hwy 1200 approximately
a mile to the south of the intersection of La. Hwy 1200 and La. Hwy 121
near the community of Hot Wells, La. The nearest major town is Boyce, La
approximately 5 miles east of the recreation area on I-49. Cotile Lake is
approximately 2,000 acres in area and consists of a main body with two arms
on the southern end.
Birding Highlight – There is a significant wading bird rookery on
the southwestern arm of Cotile Lake that is visible from the causeway that
crosses that arm. Over 250 pairs of Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Little Blue
Herons, and Cattle Egrets nest at this location during the spring and summer.
The list of 154 bird species is a “work in progress” and could
eventually include in excess of 200 bird species.
