The Louisiana legislature created Tensas Parish on March 17, 1843. Named for the Native American tribe that originally occupied the territory, Tensas Parish encompasses 602 square miles.

Tensas Parish provides the visitor with an impressive variety of St. Joseph, the seat of justice in Tensas Parish, is a beautiful steamboat town. Winter Quarters Plantation State Park provides a glimpse into the opulent life of antebellum planters in the delta region. The 3,000-acre Lake Bruin State Park offers excellent fishing and beautiful scenery. Finally, the parish has large wildlife management areas that provide excellent opportunities for hunting and fishing.
